What is Cinta?
Of all the words in Bahasa Melayu, cinta (love) has to be the most impossible word to attach just one meaning to. There are hundreds of names for it; people have made songs, puisi cinta, short stories, long stories, entire novels, kata cinta, and entire lives all about cinta.
Cinta can be defined scientifically, emotionally, psychology, or even with just song lyrics by any popular bands within the last hundred years. What is cinta? That is the question that billions of people try to answer every day, without much luck, and that is the question that will always remain unanswered.
Cinta is a Chemical Reaction
Scientists would say that cinta is a chemical reaction that people experience when they are attracted to another human being. These chemicals then form a reaction in the brain that affects the physical body of the human being. People who like to call themselves realists abide by this feeling of cinta in it that they believe that they are realistic because when asked, what is cinta? they answer with the real phenomena that happens in a person’s body that causes them to think that it is cinta.
Cinta as a Metaphor
On the other side of the spectrum are the romantics, who believe that cinta is a many splendored thing. They like to think of cinta in many different metaphors, kind of like how cinta is the thing that makes the world go round, or that cinta is all that a person needs to survive.
Cinta, for them, is what shared between two people who have been deemed by the cosmos and fate as meant for each other. When the question, what is cinta? is asked to the romantics, they get a gleam in their eye and they talk about it as if it is their life source, the one and only true meaning of life.
The Romantic Realists
Nevertheless, there are, of course, those who can deal with the question what is cinta with both a romantic and a realistic sense. These people believe in romance, but do not think that it is all that cinta is.
They recognize that when cinta brings people into relationships with another, those relationships take work. Those relationships have the capability to bring out the best and the worst in people. That there are times that you will want to leave, and there are times when you will question why you are still with that person.
These people believe that when you stay despite all the hardships, despite asking yourself what is cinta and why do I cinta this person, you decide to stick it out because you believe that your cinta is worth fighting for.
What Cinta Really Means
As you can see, the question what is cinta is much too broad to be answered with just one all encompassing statement. Cinta is one of those things that are not very empirical, but all not totally in ones emotions as well.
Cinta is one of those things that will change you, drive you, and make you want to become worth it. All that is sure is that cinta does not come to everyone and that cinta is not something that is automatic. To those that have found cinta, they should do everything in their power to try to keep it for the rest of their lives.
